Maggie in the Superstitions Wilderness

We have been having a pretty dramatic winter around Phoenix, meaning it’s a bit more grey and rainy than usual; the day after a storm you are guaranteed the sun will punch through and give you some amazing shots if you’re in the right place at the right time.  I went hiking with my family around 3 pm by the Peralta trail on the east side of the Superstition Mountains, and my daughter Maggie decided to get “experimental” with some of her posing.  All images shot on the Fuji X-T2, lenses were the 35mm 1.4 and 18-55mm 2.8-4.

As the heat is shrinking slightly around Phoenix, Maggie and I are getting out more and taking more photos.  I look forward to the kinds of emotions she gives me in our shoots, they are always a surprise.  If you enjoy any of this work I encourage you to like it and share it!  For more photoworks goodness peruse my Etsy shop, follow on tumblr and twitter and instagram, and rummage around on my full site.

New Video Art: Be My Little Hero

This is my first attempt at a video art piece with my 6 year old daughter Magdalena.  She’s been a great photographic muse, getting better every year that passes, and during our trip to Flagstaff we filmed her in her omnipresent superhero outfit.  I think her enthusiasm for being filmed is her overriding desire for her own youtube channel, like a lot of the kids she’s discovered on youtube.

I made the music with my guitar plugged into the virtual amplifiers of my iPhone via the iRig, and the Brian Eno-esque keyboard sound is another app called Crystalline Mini which reflects your guitar as a heavenly melody.  In retrospect I think I had “Be My Baby” in the back of my head when I played it.  All footage shot on my Fuji X-T1.

Maggie In Sedona

Sedona Jerome (343 of 564)This was shot February 8th of this year at Slide Rock State Park outside of Sedona, Arizona.  Maggie actually loves taking photos with dad, but over the years she’s understood that models can make money, so she’s begun charging me a dollar, 2 dollars, etc. for shooting.  She negotiates in this fashion:  “I hope I get two dollars for taking pictures with you.  And if you want to take any more it can be $3.”

Maggie’s Many Moods in Black and White

2014-05-06 16.57.33

I recently switched from PC to Mac and that means several days of transferring data and setting up new Lightroom libraries with Adobe Creative Cloud. The upshot of the new libraries is I’ve been looking through my archive and finding gems, particularly these ones of my daughter Maggie.  The 5K resolution on the Macbook Pro- and it’s blazing speed compared to my Samsung ultrabook- make it a pure pleasure to work on things, knocking these out with perhaps 10 seconds of editing time each. untitled (130 of 162)

Maggie will be 7 in 2015 and it’s getting to the point where I’m getting a nice narrative of her life through facial expressions and adventures.  This week she figured out how to bicycle without training wheels, and got a ridiculous amount of Frozen and Minecraft merch from Santa.

One thing my daughter seems to really get is that the best subjects are acting during their portrait.  She just happens to be a “ham” of an actress.  Many of the models I have shot recently haven’t tried to express any emotion whatsoever, not even in a “heroin chic” style fashion shoot, and it’s very frustrating because the images come across as lifeless.

Magdalena + The Tangerine Tree

Magdalena + The Tangerine Tree

All my new tech gets broken in with Maggie, and we took some new battery-powered monolights to our backyard to get this shot. Maggie now gets $1 when she models for me, which means she asks to go take pictures even more frequently than before.

Super Maggie and Ducky

Super Maggie and Ducky

Magdalena in front of our house with her beloved Ducky. She earns dollars “modelling” for me. Interesting what the kids pick up. Sometimes they make little comics to “sell” at our art tables. Taken with the Fujinon 35mm 1.4 prime lens, my favorite.
