In celebration of San Diego Zine Fest this weekend, I created a new Skillshare class on the topic: Make A Zine From Scratch.
Zines are DIY, fun forms of small press expression; anything goes in a zine, but when “anything goes” it often is such an open-ended concept that people don’t know where to start. In this bite-sized class we’ll put together a zine with the most basic of materials- no computers, no high-end printing or fancy art supplies.
The goal here is to craft a personal story that communicates and has all the pages facing the right direction. Beyond that, the goal is to crack open our shells, overcome fear and get familiar with self publishing. This is the first step. Signup for the class is here and, if you plan on coming out to the SD Zine Fest, stop by my table and say hi! I’m listed as Primordial Creative, my studio name.
Another year, another Fuji upgrade- here’s my review of the X-T2 along with samples! Side note, the video itself was filmed in 4k with the X-T2.
I’ve been thinking about how to better utilize my youtube channel beyond posting my video art, and I decided it’s a good place to do gear reviews and tutorials that wouldn’t fit on my Skillshare channel. As I’m making more youtube content I’m also open to requests! Comment or message me about what kind of reviews or tutorials you’d like to see and I’ll do my best to make it happen!
The Skillshare video teaching platform has Premium classes, which students need a membership to access, and Free ones, which can be viewed without a membership. I have 4 of my classes set to Free through today:
Creative Image Transfer For Photographers and Crafters
Build Your Creative Cloud Asset Library With Adobe Capture
Design A Character Based On An Ancient Culture
Speed Up Your Photography Workflow With Adobe Lightroom
See you in class!
This week’s Skillshare lesson has a really, really, really long name: it’s full title is “Creating Concept Art Pt.1: Design a Character Based on an Ancient Culture in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.” I created it while working on an animated film of the Mayan Hero Twins.
What goes into characters with real history behind them- people of the past, of legend, from mythology? In this class, we’ll explore how to approach a character based on an ancient culture – learning about their unique fashions and lifestyles – and create our own character through Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop which can be used in design and animation. This week’s class on my Skillshare channel is Manga Effects In Adobe Photoshop.
We cover screentones, making linework from your pencils, and more! As a lifelong fan of the manga art form, this was one of the most fun classes for me to put together. I have seen firsthand young artists get super thrilled when they see what a few tricks in Photoshop can do to make their art pop like the comics they read.

I have yet another Skillshare Tutorial up on my channel – this one regarding Tone Mapping in Adobe Photoshop. We cover Nik software’s HDR EFX Pro, Photoshop’s own tone mapping functions, and making the whole image gel. Here’s the trailer…
…and here’s the signup! See you in class!
I’ve got a couple new photo/ video/ Adobe classes dropping on Skillshare this week, and the first is How To Use Adobe Lightroom For Video.
Lightroom is generally thought of as a still photography program but here are a few neat tricks you can do, especially if you are just starting to work with videos, need to capture stills from your videos, or want to keep a consistent style between your existing photographic library and your video work. You’ll be able to have unique looking footage that you can piece together in your video editor such as Adobe Premiere or iMovie.
Sign up here! And if there are any particular tutorials you’d like me to do in the future, let me know in the comments!
